Born in Poole, Dorset, England, Philip Sutton moved to London to study at the Slade School of Art (1948-53), where he was taught by William Coldstream and won the Summer Composition Prize (1952). He subsequently received scholarships to travel to Spain, France and Italy before he returned to teach at the Slade (1954-1963). He has travelled widely to Australia, Fiji, Crete, Ireland and Cornwall in order to paint. In 1956, Sutton had his first solo show at Roland, Browse and Delbanco. He has since had exhibitions at the Geffrye Museum, London (1959), Leeds City Art Gallery (1960), exhibitions in Newcastle, Bradford and Edinburgh in (1961) and at the Graves Art Gallery, Sheffield (1971).
