Born Berlin, Germany
Died California, USA
Meta C. Hendel was born Meta Cohen (Cohn) in Berlin in 1883 and later adopted the name of her fiancé, Hendel, after he died in the First World War. She studied painting and graphic arts at the Berlin and Paris academies, continuing her studies at the Académie Moderne in Paris under Fernand Léger and Amédée Ozenfant, before returning to Germany. In 1936, she left Germany and lived for brief periods in Italy and England. In 1941 she immigrated to the United States, living in New York then settling in San Francisco with a studio on Buena Vista Hill, and was naturalised around 1947.
Hendel developed a unique technique of colour wood-engraving in the 1920s. Her work was featured in 1930 in the ‘International Exhibition of Alpine Art’ in Budapest and three years later, in a further exhibition in Antwerp. In 1941, she exhibited her wood-engravings at the New York Public Library. With the encouragement of Meier Schapiro, she began her own business reproducing modern masters in colour wood-engraving, producing works after Klee, Léger, Picasso and Rouault. She also gave private art lessons in painting and printmaking in her studio and was an art instructor at the San Francisco Institute of Adult Education.
Hendel was a member of the California Society of Etchers and the San Francisco Women Artists. She exhibited with these organisations, as well as the San Francisco Art Association. Her first comprehensive exhibition was mounted in San Francisco at the Legion of Honor and she had solo exhibitions at venues including the City of Paris, Raymond and Raymond Gallery, Labaudt Gallery, and the de Young Museum in San Francisco, as well as in Munich, Berlin, Budapest, Florence, Milan, London, and New York.
Meta Cohen Hendel died in Mountain View, California in 1970.
